Karwa Chauth is a festival celebrated by Hindu women of Northern and Western India on the fourth day after Purnima in the month of Kartika. On Karwa Chauth, married women, observe fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands. In the evening, a community women-only ceremony is held. Participants dress in fine clothing and wear jewellery and mehandi, and in some regions dress in the complete finery of their wedding dresses. The fasters sit in a circle with their puja thalis, the story of Karwa Chauth is narrated, while passing their thalis around in the circle.
